Almost every freezer that comes in for repair is failing in one of three ways. Knowing which one you are looking at tells you most of what the visit will find and roughly what it will cost.
Frost: moisture arriving faster than it leaves
A freezer can only frost with water it gets from somewhere, and the somewhere is room air. A door or drawer left slightly open, a seal that has torn or flattened, and a drain tube that has frozen are the usual routes; the defrost cycle clears the coil, and the same moisture is back within days. Drift: the temperature creeping up
Here the cabinet is not icy, just warm. Ice cream turns soft, meat gives when pressed, and the display may still show the number it was set to, because the number on the panel is the setpoint you asked for, not a reading of the air. Before looking inside, look at the condenser: a grille blocked with dust makes the machine run longer and hold less. After that come the fans, the sensors and the board that reads them. A freezer that has stopped holding 0°F is set against the bands it can land in under a freezer not holding 0°F.
Defrost: the heat that stopped arriving
A frost-free freezer warms its own coil on a schedule and drains the water away. When the heater, or the thermostat or sensor that ends each cycle, fails, the coil ices up layer by layer until air stops passing through it. What the visit does
The model and serial come off the rating plate, a probe goes into the compartment, and the frost pattern, the fans and the defrost circuit are checked in that order. Gauges go on the sealed system only when everything outside it has been ruled out. You are told the band and the figure before any part is ordered, and the $89 for the visit comes off the repair.
