What the fan is doing in there
The coil in a Sub-Zero freezer does the cooling, but only for the air that actually passes through it. The evaporator fan is what moves that air: it draws it out of the compartment, drives it across the coil and returns it through the vents. When the motor stops, the coil stays cold and the compartment around it does not.
A motor seldom quits without warning. Worn bearings start to buzz, or ice works its way onto the blades and they tick or scrape with each turn — Sub-Zero names ice on the freezer fan among the causes of that kind of noise.
